About Me

Well Canute's just this guy, you know? Coder, gamer, father, husband, cook, occasional leader.

Coder: I've been interested in electronic devices, figuring out how they work, and programming them since I was a small boy. I have childhood memories of going to department stores with my mother and instead of heading for the toy section, I would head for the electronics section. You would find me standing on my little tip toes playing with the Commodore and Atari demo computers that they had set up for display. The mystery of "10 PRINT 'HELLO WORLD', 20 GOTO 10" just simply amazed me and I have been hooked ever since. I've lost more than one girlfriend and a wife because (in their words) "I loved my computer more than them."

Gamer: I enjoy participating in gaming in many forms: computer & console, cards, board and role-playing to name a few. I grew up on D&D second edition, often bringing the books to school with me in fourth grade. I was a huge Magic: The Gathering player in the earlier days. I was a pretty big MMO addict for a period of years, cutting my teeth on the MUD Medievia, then playing Ultima Online, Everquest, Asheron's Call (1 and 2), Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft. These days I enjoy a lot of euro-style boardgames and indie games for the PC. I really enjoy learning the rules of a new game and formulating successful strategies to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentation of their meeples.

Father: Yes, at some point in my life I found a gullible woman and tricked her into producing my spawn. As a result, I have two wonderful children: Trew and Morgan. My son's name stems from the "QWERTY" keys on the keyboard: Trew is WERT backwards. I felt that he should have a semi-unique name like mine, it's tough as a kid but it helped (read: forced) me to recognize the value of being an individual. I wanted the same for him. My daughter's name makes her initials "MAB", which my wife and I liked because of the referenece to Queen Mab from literature. One of the high points of my paternal experience is teaching my kids to appreciate Monty Python. Yeah, we're all a bunch of dorks.

Husband: After a very early marriage that didn't pan out (I was 18. Lesson for the day: Don't get married at 18, neither you or the other person really know who you are at that age), I found a woman with whom I was much more compatible. She loves the computer and gaming just as much as I do and she's a wonderful, supporting partner.

Cook: Yes, I like to cook! I'm no world class chef or anything like that, but I can follow a recipe and have been told that I make good food. I like to read Cook's Illustrated and am interested in the chemistry behind cooking.

Occasional Leader: I have a very strong personality and have no qualms with standing up for what I believe in, even if it is not the popular thing to do. I'm also a man of action and catalyst for change that prefers doing things instead of talking about them. I expect to leave every meeting with actionable items that are followed up on. I understand diplomacy and political correctness and I recognize their place in business; however, they aren't an excuse to sacrifice your ethics and morals. If I am wrong, I have no problem admitting it, but when I am right I am tenacious about following through.
